The nursing staff at the Englehart & District Hospital (EDH) participated in training on March 6th and March 7th learning how to use the new Plum 360 Intravenous Pump. A total of 10 new pumps have been purchased for $45,000 using donations from the local community raised by a dedicated group of sponsors and volunteer organizers who conduct the hospital’s annual fundraiser.

These pumps are the next generation of the Plum A+ pumps that were previously being used.  The new pumps are ready for the future of medication administration in hospital settings.   The pump can incorporate scanning of the bar code from the patient’s identification band, the intravenous bag, and the medication order and show the unique dosage instructions and settings for each individual patient.  As well, the pumps have a built in medication library that keeps nursing up to date with medication drug limits.  All of this helps us meet patient quality improvement initiatives and patient safety goals.

The library feature will begin to be used in 2019 in a joint initiative with Kirkland and District Hospital (KDH).  This joint initiative means standardized IV equipment across both sites resulting in standardized training, policies and overall efficiencies for patient safety.  The fact that the new IV pumps are very similar to the previous IV pumps has made for a fairly smooth transition leading up to their March 8th implementation date.

The need for new pumps became apparent over the last several months as patient volumes increased and the need for pumps exceeded availability.  During these periods EDH was able to obtain some extra pumps from their partner hospital – KDH – to help ensure patient safety was not jeopardized.
