Blanche River Health Foundation: A Vital Link in Community Healthcare
Closing the Gap: How Community Support Fuels Exceptional Healthcare
Every day, hospitals save lives and serve their communities — but none of that would be possible without the right equipment and facilities. At Blanche River Health (BRH), the need for state-of-the-art tools and building upgrades has never been greater.
While the government funds some of these needs, the majority of the life-saving tools required to provide exceptional patient care come from the generosity of donors. Our clinicians rely on Blanche River Health Foundation’s fundraising efforts to supply the critical resources that make outstanding care possible at our hospitals in Englehart and Kirkland Lake.
“Community support fills the gap between what government funding covers and what patients need,” says Jorge VanSlyke, President and CEO of BRH. “The Foundation plays a vital role in improving local healthcare.”
The Role of the Foundation
Founded in 1984, the Blanche River Health Foundation (BRHF) raises funds for essential medical equipment, supporting initiatives that enhance patient care, and encourage community involvement in healthcare sustainability.
“When my son broke his arm last winter, the quick access to X-rays and diagnosis made all the difference,” shared a Kirkland Lake resident. “Knowing that community donations funded that equipment makes me proud to live here.”
“The Foundation bridges the gap, allowing us to deliver the best possible care,” says BRHF Vice Chair, Rene Boudreault. “It ensures our hospitals remain at the forefront of community health.”
Why the Foundation Matters
Legacy gifts like Olga Jackson’s donation, which funded two non-urgent patient transfer vehicles and other essential hospital needs, leave a lasting impact, while contributions from local businesses, charitable clubs like the Legion, Rotary and others, and individuals fund critical upgrades. Georgia-Pacific’s annual donation supported the acquisition of vital equipment for the Englehart site, and Sharon Eady’s $35,000 gift honored the dedication of our emergency department staff.
“I remember a time when my father had to be transported to a larger community for a scan,” recalls a longtime Englehart resident. “Thanks to donations, we now have advanced diagnostic tools like a CT scanner right here, saving time and potentially saving lives.”
Agnico Eagle Mines Limited has been a key community partner, investing over $4 million to improve healthcare in our communities. This support has funded the purchase of a CT scanner and renovations to its area and the relocation of Physiotherapy and Respiratory departments to accommodate future ICU upgrades.
“These investments transform how our medical teams care for patients,” says Brian Bronson, a long-time Foundation volunteer member. “Every donation—large or small—helps bring better care to our friends, families, and neighbors.”
Each year, the BRHF team looks to the community for your generosity and support. “As we look to the future, I am inspired by the generosity and commitment of our community,” says John Sullivan, Foundation Board Chair. “Together, we are making a difference, ensuring that BRH continues to provide outstanding care close to home.”
The People Behind the Mission
The Foundation’s success is driven by a dedicated team of volunteers and staff from the Englehart and Kirkland Lake area, all working to connect donors with hospital needs.
“Joining the Foundation board showed me how much this community gives,” says Sandy Austin, who joined the Foundation in 2024. “It’s inspiring to be part of something that impacts so many lives.”
“Our Foundation exists because of this community and its needs,” adds Mary Ann Mavrinac, Foundation Board member. “Together, we aim to make healthcare more accessible and sustainable for everyone close to where they live.”
This dedicated team includes passionate individuals who bring diverse skills and perspectives to the table. From planning fundraising events to fostering relationships with donors, each member plays a vital role in supporting the hospital's mission.
