#BTS Emergency and ICU Department
Blanche River Health is taking you behind the scenes of the ICU and ER!
“The ER department provides 24/7 care for patients experiencing a wide range of illnesses or injuries. The cases treated in the department range from minor to life-threatening, and patients are treated based on the severity of their illnesses. If your needs are outside the scope of what the specially trained BRH team can provide, you will be assessed, stabilized, and transferred to a hospital that offers specialized care designed to meet your needs,” says Melanie Szulga, Patient Care Manager.
Szulga adds, “Our ER at the Kirkland Lake site sees approximately 15,000 pre-COVID, and the Englehart site sees approximately 2,450 patients a year. Both sites continue to serve you through the pandemic! The community should feel confident knowing their medical teams at the Englehart and Kirkland Lake sites are ready to provide the care they need.”
The ICU team has many roles, but most importantly it provides critical care to acutely ill and injured patients. ICU patients typically require advanced care measures that are supported by the interdisciplinary team. This team is comprised of nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and lab technicians. Due to the demands of COVID, it had to adapt its space to ensure proper ventilation in rooms in order to keep both the staff and patients safe.
